We have a large family and a huge pile of photos, where do we start?
First get together with involved family members and decide on a focal point for your Legacy Book. Usually the oldest couple or family unit. It is better to start with your oldest "Legacy" because this one is the most time sensitive.
Once you have decided on your focal point you will need to gather all family photos and memorabilia and sort them by decade. By doing this you will make the timeline and people easier to identify.
If you have decided to include more than 3 generations in your Legacy Book™ you must consider that the amount of content per generation will have to be minimized. Keep in mind when you come across a stack of photos of the same event that they all do not need to be included. You can use a handful or so to show the highlights of the event without having to use them all.
The Process
-
Some of my photos are glued into a scrapbook, do we have to take them out?
No. Having worked with old scrapbooks, we have developed a method of scanning that will produce excellent quality images without damaging the original photos or integrity of the scrapbook.
-
I don't know the names of everyone in the photos, should we still use them?
It depends. If you are fairly certain that the photos were taken of a non-family event, and the people do not show up in any other photos then it is likely that those individuals are not an integral part of your family Legacy. However, if an unnamed person repeatedly shows up, then it might be worthwhile to hold on to the photos until all of the decades are sorted through. At which point you might just come across a labeled photo with a vital clue as to their place in your family history.
-
We don't have dates, some of the names are missing, can we still make a book?
Yes. Of course it would be a more complete legacy if you had that vital information, but it is not absolutely necessary. We can even make a book if you just give us a box of unsorted photos without any information!
-
We found some old negatives and I don't know what they are or if they are important. Should we bother with them?
YES. The unknown is worth investigating when you are dealing with a family Legacy. We can scan any format negative, so just put them with your photos and after the scanning phase we will know whether they are worth using. There is a link on this page> RESEARCH that could shed light on what sort of negatives you might have.
-
We have negatives that we would like to use, can you scan them?
Yes. We will scan any format negative.
-
I found some old slides but they are not in good shape.
It's worth trying. Put them with your photo collection and we will see what we can do.
Compressed air will be used for any “dusting” on prints, negatives or slides. We have professional photo cleaning solutions for any images requiring a major cleaning. You will be consulted for any cleaning issues that may arise.
-
How do we sort all these photos?
Sort them by decade, and if you choose a subcategory of family unit. Shoe boxes or old photo albums (not the sticky page kind) are useful. If you would like boxes to help you along, contact support@ourlegacybook.com. We found that it is best to schedule "sorting" sessions. Nothing more than an hour or two at a time because this can get pretty involved and you don't want to lose track of time - set a timer. Get family members involved. Maybe you could have everyone take a stack for sorting and then combine them later.
-
I have a disc (CD-Rom) that a family member gave us, can you use those for our book?
We will need to see the files to determine the DPI and resolution vs. the pixel dimensions. If the files are within our standards then we will definitely be able to use them.
-
We have a studio portrait that we would like included, how do I get a copyright release?
You are right to ask. Any professional photograph will need a copyright consent form signed by the photographer for inclusion in the book. If the portrait was taken over 70 years ago we should be safe without a copyright release. Your best bet is to try and locate the studio named on the print. You can find a downloadable copyright consent form here.
-
We want to get a DVD slideshow but would like to include a tape recording of my grandmother - is this possible?
Yes. The quality of the audio will be determined by it's original condition. We do have a professional audio technician on hand to provide you with the best DVD sound possible.
-
How long does it take to get our book?
Depending on the content to be scanned and the number of pages to be designed, from scanning to delivery can run anywhere from 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 months.
-
I was given the pictures from my grandparent's estate. Everybody wants copies, can you help?
Yes. We can scan all of the photos and provide you with a 24k gold disc. You may copy the disc for family members or they can order Gold discs from us.
-
These photos are all we have and they are very precious to us, what are your care and handling practices?
What has brought us to The Legacy Book™ is a passion for preservation. Every photo, negative, scrapbook etc. that comes through our hands is treated with great care. Which is why (at this point in time) we do not recommend mailing and prefer to transfer the items hand to hand. All photos and negatives are handled with white cotton gloves. We use compressed air for dusting.( No cleaning is done without consulting you first.) When your items are not on the table for scanning, they are stored in a fire-safe. As soon as the scanning phase is complete your items are quickly delivered back to you. If you have a very large collection we might consider having you break it into groups, and we will scan only one group at a time, just so that we do not have all of it in one place.
-
Can you digitize an old 8mm home movie for us?
We have done some research on this and have found a company that can do it. The pricing depends on the length of the reel and starts around $30.
-
My uncle has a complete geneological history, can we put this in the book too?
Definitely.
-
We don't have alot of photos but we would love to have them in a Legacy Book, can we order a smaller # of pages?
Yes. The least number of pages available is 40. You can find pricing on a 40 page book here Pricing
Keep in mind also that the Legacy book is not only about the photographs, but can include stories and memorabilia. With a small number of photos, you can capitalize on the stories, old newspapers and letters etc.
-
Our family has a reunion coming up and we would like to have several copies made, do you have a limit on book copies?
At this point in time there is not a limit on copies. For numbers over 50 we can consult the publisher and see about getting a lower "per book" price.
